class discussion sept 3-9 #3

3). Pick one concept from the assigned reading this week, not already discussed, that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.

One concept that I found useful is the concept of cohesion. Cohesion is the degree to which an individual member of group feels attraction to the group and how well the group members interact. I am big sports fanatic, I also coach baseball for leagues in Gilroy and in Hollister. When ever I am conducting practice I like to see how cohesive my team is. I can get a sense of how cohesive they are by seeing if I need to be there for every moment or if they can conduct a practice by themselves. At the beginning of the season I will lead to stretching drills and continue to do this over time until I feel that it is time for the players to conduct the stretching by themselves. Later I will add drills and stations of various baseball techniques but as the season goes on and they show they are capable of doing it by themselves I then will let the players run the practice. I then will turn into a coach/cheerleader coaching them if they still have problems with certain tasks and cheering them on with praise if they are able to do it by themselves.

I found out that the more I turned into cheerleader, the more cohesive the group became. In the end the players would at times correct other players if they did something wrong or they would give praise if the player did something right.

  1. The authors also write that the positive feelings cohesive groups feel help members stay motivated and willing to work extra hard. When you turn into a cheerleader, you are definitely helping them become more cohesive and have these positive feelings. The authors also write that, “Cohesive groups are more effective, more satisfied, and tend to make better decisions.” I’m willing to bet that as each season progresses and your teams become more cohesive, individual members begin using “we” instead of “I” and each member as well as the team as a whole tend to make better decisions on the field, which lead to better performances on the field and in their leagues.

  2. Hello Mrgonzalez0316, I liked reading about cohesion this week too. I liked that you discussed how you feel about cohesion and how it relates to your life. I can understand how bringing your team together is an important aspect of your job as coach. Creating a cohesive group of individuals can help the team as a whole, not only perform better because they will be able to rely on each other, but to also create a feeling of unity amongst the group. I work in an atmosphere where this is an important factor. Having my coworkers and I create a cohesive atmosphere/relationship at work makes everything run smoother.

  3. Hello! I really like your post. The concept you have chosen is of excellent importance. In some cases it is the most important because it can determine if a group will succeed or not. Cohesion, like you said, is the degree to which an individual member of group feels attraction to the group and how well the group members interact. Like yourself I am also a coach, but in the sport of gymnastics. And I have also found the revelation that when I become more of a cheerleader, my students tend to work together and know what they are suppose to do as well. It takes awhile for them to catch on with the swing of things, but once they do it always amazes me.
